The Volkswagen ID.1 will use ID.3 mechanics for half the price

Volkswagen is achieving its long-awaited success with the ever-expanding electric family. The ID models will see their offer expanded over the next few years with the launch of units that will be located in the highest part of the range and also in the smallest. The latter will be the most popular thanks to various arguments, although it will mainly be due to price. The Volkswagen ID.1 will not see the light until the year 2025, although it will not take that long to see a preview and much less in knowing its best kept secrets, such as the price.

On more than one occasion we have already told you about the Volkswagen e-Up! The most affordable and smallest electric in the house has become a best seller in certain European countries such as Germany. Despite the fact that there are more modern solutions on the market, customers are looking for the e-Up! for its excellent value for money. At first Volkswagen removed it from its lineup of products, although given the demand it sold it again, and after that the production is not enough since the demand is still higher than expected.

Although we will see some advances before, the Volkswagen ID.1 will not see the light until 2025.

With that success in hand, Volkswagen knows it needs to expand its access electric offering. Although the long-awaited Volkswagen Aero B will become the standard for autonomy and technology, the Volkswagen ID.1 will be one of the best-selling electric cars. With a size similar to the current Volkswagen Polo, the small electric will be manufactured in Spain, along with its siblings derived from the CUPRA and Skoda houses. All of them will have a marked Spanish accent, as will their batteries, which will be assembled in the new facilities that Volkswagen plans to build in Sagunto (Valencia).

Volkswagen ID.1: first technical data

The well-known MEB platform will be the one that gives life to the ID.1 and to the entire family of access electric cars of the Volkswagen Group. However, unlike the Volkswagen ID.3, it will employ the smaller version of it, called MEB Entry with a wheelbase shortened by 10 centimeters. Despite this cut, the battery will be able to adapt to the modified structure, using the format of 58 kWh net capacity. A larger format is not expected since, given the urban concept of the model, the access battery will be able to offer more than enough performance and autonomy.

The first figures that Volkswagen is considering give the ID.1 an electric range of 400 kilometers, more than enough for the coming and going of the day to day. Only rear-wheel drive versions with a power of up to 204 will be offered, mounting the same configuration as the access ID.3. With a smaller size and lighter weight, the performance will be excellent, offering acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than seven seconds. All this will represent a substantial improvement over the current e-Up!

In terms of price, as stated Coach, the Volkswagen ID.1 will have a starting cost of less than 20,000 euros, half of a Volkswagen ID.3 with the same mechanical configuration. With that price, the Germans hope that their most affordable electric will become a bestseller. As we have already said, production will take place in Spain, although plans indicate that it will not be before 2025 when manufacturing begins. Much earlier, possibly at the next Paris Motor Show in October, or in Geneva in February of next year, we will see an official preview that will be very similar to the final model.
