The Smart #1 has had a great reception in its debut in the Chinese market. With the opening of the order book, the subsidiary of the Mercedes Group and now also of Geelyconverted to a completely electric brand, has received more than 10,000 reservations in just 24 hours for the first of its models, an electric SUV based on a new platform and with a new vehicle conceptno longer as urban as those that previously characterized the brand.
In China, the Smart #1 has gone on sale with a price ranging from 190,000 to 230,000 RMB (€27,200 – €33,000) already discounted subsidies. On April 25, after the opening of the website and the order book and in just 24 hours, the Smart #1 received more than 10,000 advance reservations.
It has been created after the collaboration agreement signed by Mercedes-Benz and Geely, and launched in China as the first of the markets in which it will be offered. The design is the work of the German manufacturer while the part of engineering and mechanics has corresponded to Geely, since the Smart #1 uses the SEA platform (Sustainable Experience Architecture) of the Chinese group.
The Smart #1 is a compact SUV, fully electric, which becomes the brand’s largest model to date, with a length of 4,270 mm, a width of 1,822 mm, a height of 1,636 mm and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. The total weight of the vehicle is 1,820 kilograms due to the presence of the battery. Elements have been introduced in the design that contribute to increasing the aerodynamics of the whole, such as the frameless windows, the hidden door opening handles, with which it achieves an aerodynamic coefficient of 0.29.
Inside it has a 12.8-inch center display high resolution and a screen of 9.2-inch behind-the-wheel instrumentation. In its interior, the design of the ring-shaped aerators that are reminiscent of those of the previous models of the brand (ForTwo and ForFour), and the ambient lighting, which allows you to select between 64 colors and 24 brightness levels, stand out.
In the mechanical part it has a 200 kW electric motor (268 hp) of power capable of developing 313Nm of torque. With these specifications it is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 180 km/h and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. To feed it, it has a lithium battery whose cells are formed by ternary NCM cathodes. Its capacity is 66 kWh that homologates an autonomy in the WLTP cycle between the 420 and 440 kilometers, depending on the final specifications of each version. Recharging it from a household socket to 80% takes approximately 7.5 hours. If you choose to recharge it at a point that offers 22 kW of power (three-phase), the time is reduced to three and a half hours. Finally, in direct current, in a fast charger this time is reduced to 30 minutes thanks to the fact that its maximum charging power is 150 kW.
It has an intelligent assisted driving system (ADAS) that includes adaptive cruise control, lane keeping system, blind spot monitoring system, among other functions. The software supports updating via OTA (over the air) so that its characteristics can improve over time without the need for the vehicle to go through the workshop.
