After the total renewal of the 308, and before publicly showing the successor to the 3008, Peugeot has decided to try its luck in an indefinite format among the misnamed SUV coupes. A design that mixes some characteristics of SUVs, saloons and coupes, although in no case the rear doors are dispensed with. Thus has arisen the peugeot 408, whose name responds to the Chinese market (there it will be called 408X), to which it is very directed, although it will also be sold in Europe, and which already indicates that it is not an SUV (identified with four numbers in the brand) nor is it a sedan. Finally It arrives by changing the recipe a little because in the rear part a volume is not drawn as large as that of other competing models.
The 408 front end design does not hide his familiarity with the two models with which he shares a segment in the lion brand: the compact 308 and the SUV 3008. Seen from the front, it grows in muscle and changes the grille, which is now treated vertically and painted in body color. as in the 100% electric models of the brand: the e-208 and the e-2008. An effect that makes it almost disappear and that indicates its path towards electrification. In fact, Peugeot has already announced a fully electric version of this model. Thin Matrix LED optics are associated with the well-known crocs LEDs that are placed within black lacquered elements as in the 3008. The design is completed by a sculpted bonnet with pleats that increase the muscular sensation of its front end.
Their profile It is the one that shows all the originality of the 408, because that is where it differs from the rest of the models integrated into that rare category of SUV coupes. With a height of just 1.48 meters it is more like a raised sedan than an SUV, so perhaps it could be categorized as a crossover. It also has a long wheelbase.2.79 meters that amplifies this feeling. Its total length is 4.69 meters, just five centimeters more than the 308 SW. With these dimensions it is located, within the Peugeot range, between 308 and 3008 at the bottom and 508 at the top.
Finally, at the rear, the low body eschews the usual massive styling of SUV coupes and takes on a hatchback style with a roof that slopes down sharply to end in a very slim taillight panel, also present on the latest SUV models. Peugeot. The body features a large number of ribs that bring it close to the threshold of SUV design codes and shows the aerodynamic work that has gone into this car. The 308 SW’s ducktail spoiler is also found at the end of the 408’s tailgate. It arises from two sculpted elements in the roof that concentrate the aerodynamic flow in the center of the tailgate. This houses a box with 471 liters of capacity in the plug-in hybrid version and 536 in the thermal.
Inside the 408 you can practically discover a trace that the brand already premiered in the 308, with the same digital screens arranged in the brand’s exclusive 3D i-Cockpit. Both offer a high-quality display, with a 3D effect that puts the most important information in the foreground standing out from the rest, personalized settings and navigation software from TomTom. peugeot announces OTA updates (over the air) for the 408 that ensure that the operating system and navigation will always have the latest versions.
The rear seat row offers good legroom thanks to the car’s wide wheelbase and roof clearance should be sufficient for passengers of average height, as the drop from the roof into the boot starts beyond the upright position of the sidewalk.
The 408 will not change the mechanics that have already been announced for the 308. Two plug-in hybrid engines of 180 and 225 hp that start from a 1.6 Puretech gasoline thermal engine with 150 or 180 CV and 250 Nm of maximum torque. They are accompanied by an 82 kW (110 hp) permanent magnet synchronous electric motor powered by a 12.4 kWh capacity battery and all this is coupled through the e-EAT8 gearbox supplied by the Japanese Aisin. The only thermal variant mounts a three-cylinder Puretech 130 gasoline engine with an EAT8 automatic gearbox.
Prices and availability
The manufacture of the Peugeot 408 will be carried out in the French factory in Mulhouse. The manufacturer has provided order opening for the second half of 2022with the intention of making the first deliveries in 2023. The 100% electric version will hit the market in early 2024. Prices have not communicated yet although logically they will be placed between those of the 308 SW and the 3008.
