NAMX HUV, a hydrogen SUV with interchangeable tanks and 800 kilometers of autonomy

We are at a time when new mobility solutions are born every day. Alternative systems that seek to reduce the impact on emissions. The startup NAMX, founded by former employees of large manufacturers such as Renault, Matra and others, officially presents the HUV. An electric SUV based on hydrogen whose main point of interest is its interchangeable cell scheme to extend autonomy.

You have to understand that at the moment we are facing a concept car, although quite real. In collaboration with Pininfarina, which has been in charge of the design, the NAMX HUV proposes an alternative system to those that we can currently see in the industry. As such, the SUV is several years away from completion. The brand plans its launch throughout 2025, setting the start of its development tests from 2023. For two years NAMX engineers will test the revolutionary system with which they intend to give a new approach to mobility.

At first glance, the HUV appears to have quite generous dimensions. Without giving specific details, Pininfarina has based its design on American cars from the 50s and 60s. “Fascinated by science fiction, Thomas Lussac (NAMX co-founder) chose to give the vehicle a cutting-edge shape for the next era.” A somewhat ornate way of saying that a futuristic and muscular design was sought. The result is quite attractive, especially the rear, which is the one that keeps the most secrets.

Hydrogen sounds like a viable alternative to current fuels, but the problem lies in the distribution and recharging infrastructure. For that reason, the creators have thought of a system of quickly interchangeable auxiliary tanks. With a large capacity main tank, interchangeable auxiliary tanks allow you to extend the range of autonomy. The official figures that the company is considering are around 800 kilometers.

NAMX is also working on creating a recharging infrastructure network. A series of points where you can quickly exchange auxiliary tanks and continue on your way. In the performance section, the HUV will have two versions. A rear-wheel drive access unit that will deliver 300 horsepower. The official figures shuffle a time from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour.

At a higher level of performance will be the NAMX HUV GTH. With an all-wheel drive scheme, power will increase to the 550 horsepower with a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. Although we are still far from the production stage, NAMX has already thought about possible selling prices. The figure of 65,000 euros is being considered for the access model and 95,000 euros for the most powerful variant. Somewhat high figures for such a first-time manufacturer, but we will see how the idea flows in the coming years.
