Maranello is electrified: Ferrari will expand its factory to build electric cars

In the middle of last year, John Elkann, president of Ferrari and Stellantis, and grandson of the mighty Gianni Agnelli, appointed Benedetto Vigna as the new CEO of Ferrari for “reinvent” the Italian brand for the coming years where electrification will be crucial. And in this sense, the manufacturer of the cavallino It is already beginning to prepare the expansion of its factory in Maranello with a new production line destined to manufacture hybrid and electric cars.

Next week Ferrari will hold a meeting with investors, according to advances Automotive Newsto report on the brand’s upcoming business plans, including electrification.

Among the topics to be discussed will be the extension of the famous Maranello factory, where Ferrari sports cars have been coming from for decades. Ferrari has bought some land attached to the factory, where it will apparently build a new production line dedicated especially to electrified modelsthat is, the hybrid and fully electric models.

The information comes from sources close to Ferrari, who have asked to remain anonymous. According to this source, the expansion of the factory will probably include a new battery R&D center. On June 16, Benedetto Vigna, CEO of Ferrari, is expected to shed light on the manufacturer’s strategy and its business plan for the coming years.

Benedtto Vigna, who came to Ferrari from STMicroelectronics, has reorganized the company’s structure and brought in several executives from his previous company. He has also teamed up with chipmaker Qualcomm to push the digitization of Ferrari cars. Elkann saw in him a technological profile that will be very necessary for the coming years.

The electrification of Ferrari is not a trivial issue for the company, which has built its fame -among other things- for its excellent 12 and 8-cylinder engines. Ferrari’s first electric car will arrive in 2025, as confirmed by John Elkann, whose development will require a large investment. Ferrari is the car brand with the highest profit margins, but investors and analysts already predict that profits could decrease in the coming years given the magnitude of the necessary investments.

It is worth mentioning that Ferrari has already put several hybrid models on the market. The first of them was the Ferrari LaFerrari, which had a hybrid system focused exclusively on increasing performance (so much so that the brand wanted to keep it a secret that the car could run in completely electric mode). In 2019 it launched its first series production plug-in hybrid, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, whose hybrid system delivers 1,000 CV of power thanks to a V8 biturbo and three electric motors. And in the middle of last year the Ferrari 296 GTBa plug-in hybrid with a V6 engine that is currently positioned as the access to the brand’s range.
