GAC’s new LFP batteries: 20% more energy and 1.5 million kilometers

Chinese electric car maker GAC has unveiled new battery technology using LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry that could achieve a range of 1,000 kilometers in an average electric car. The base of the cathodes of the cells of these batteries is formed by lithium iron phosphate (SmLFP), which, according to the manufacturer, represent a new generation of batteries based on this cobalt-free chemistry. With the microcrystalline technology Using GAC, the gravimetric energy density increases by 13.5% and the volumetric energy density by 20% compared to traditional lithium cells.

The new technology has been presented during the event tech-day that the Chinese group celebrates every year. In 2021, during this same event, GAC demonstrated a new battery technology that it would implement in the Aion V electric SUV, which would incorporate graphene, and with which it also promised 1,000 kilometers of autonomy and charging at rates of 3C and 6C.

This year, GAC has presented its lithium iron phosphate (SmLFP) technology) next generation based on microcrystalline technology. According to him, it is possible to achieve an increase in 13.5% in the gravimetric energy density and a twenty % in volumetric energy density compared to traditional lithium cells.

The technology adds a microcrystalline active material to the cathode that increases capacity to the traditional lithium iron phosphate chemistry system. This addition improves both the energy density as the indicators low temperature operationthe fast charge and the useful life of LFP batteries. Furthermore, according to the company, the accuracy of the battery management system also improves significantly.

The technology allows the battery to achieve an increase in available capacity of around 10% at very low temperatures (-20°C), allowing fast charging speeds of 2C and even higher. Rate C is used as an indicative load multiplier. So 2C means that theoretically the battery could be fully charged in half an hour. Similarly, 3C means that the battery can be fully charged in a third of an hour. GAC added that the battery can reach a useful life of up to 1.5 million kilometers without degradation preventing its use in an electric vehicle.

The new battery technology will initially be applied to the latest model under GAC’s subsidiary brand Aion, which will be introduced next year.

In March last year, GAC launched a new battery-charger technology with which it claimed to have achieved for the first time that ternary cathode (NCM-Nickel Cobalt Manganese) lithium battery packs and LFPs do not catch fire in the puncture tests.

In 2020, GAC introduced its silicon sponge negative electrode battery technology, which achieves cell-level energy densities of 280Wh/Kg and ranges of 1,000 kilometers. The technology allows battery volume to be reduced by 20% and weight by 14% at the same power level. The battery range can reach 650 kilometers even in low temperature conditions. In January, GAC Aion announced the launch of the Aion LX Plus, which provides a range of up to 1,000 kilometers in the European NEDC cycle with a 144.4 kWh capacity battery pack.
