Ford management has finally awarded the Valencian factory in Almussafes the production in Europe of the new GE2 electric vehicle platform from 2025, a workload with which the factory guarantees its continuity in the coming years.
The Valencian plant has thus prevailed over the Saarlouis plant (Germany), which also aspired to the platform. In order to guarantee the future of the factory, the Electrification Agreement signed by UGT together with Ford’s European management on January 27 has been decisive, which was later included in the collective agreement ratified on April 13.
The Almussafes factory will manufacture the company’s two new electric cars under the aforementioned GE2 platform, an evolution of the GE1, on which the Ford Mustang Mach-E is currently based.
Today the Valencian factory houses the production of the Ford Kuga, Ford Transit, Ford Tourneo Connect, Ford S-Max and Ford Galaxy; A few months ago, the production of the Ford Mondeo was also carried out, although at the end of March it definitively left its assembly lines. This variety of products is expected to decrease significantly in the coming years, remaining only with the Ford Kuga for the year 2024, so the award of this new platform will be the best way to revitalize and guarantee Valencian production.
Production of the two new electric models will guarantee a period of 15 years, to which a labor restructuring will have to be included, as well as an adaptation of its workers to be able to work on pure electric vehicles. However, after guaranteeing the future of the assembly plant, it would remain to be seen what will happen to the factory dedicated to the production of engines and in which there is a staff of more than 1,000 workers. Currently, this factory has guaranteed work until 2030, however, from then on and once electric vehicles are imposed on the North American company, the European directive will have to alter its main work, as well as carry out an important personnel restructuring.
The Valencian factory, with 5,971 employees, is a leading company in the automotive industry in the province and in the Valencian Community, where the Sagunto Volkswagen cell gigafactory will also be located.
