The IAA Transportation 2022 in Hannover has gone a long way. Virtually all manufacturers in the sector have presented electrified novelties at the German show, and logically DAF could not be less. One of the most important truck manufacturers in Europe could not miss the event, and in which it has presented two new electric trucks with a very remarkable autonomy.
DAF has presented the new generation of the DAF XD and XF, and with them their electric versions: the DAF XD Electric and XF Electric. These are two new ‘zero emissions’ trucks that respond to a growing need: more and more European municipalities are restricting the access of polluting vehicles to the urban core, so transport companies will have to resort to fully electric trucks.
The new DAF XD and XF Electric mount modular batteries with capacities ranging from 210 to 525 kWh, depending on the configuration. Each battery has a capacity of 105 kWh and, depending on the customer’s needs and the version chosen, between 2 and 5 packs can be equipped. With the smallest capacity battery, the trucks offer 200 kilometers of autonomy. With the largest battery, they reach “more than 500 kilometers” of autonomy on a single charge, depending on the model and the application, which allows them to cover 1000 kilometers in a day.
As for the engines, the DAF XD and XF Electric are fitted with Paccar EX-D1 and Paccar EX-D2 permanent magnet synchronous machines, which offer a power of between 170 kW (230 hp) and 350 kW (480 hp), depending Of the version. Models with the Paccar EX-D1 engine have 1,200 Nm of peak torque, while EX-D2 engines deliver 1,975 Nm of peak torque.
These new electric trucks from DAF have fast charge in direct current at 325 kW of power maximum, thanks to which it can be charged from 0 to 80% in about 45 minutes (version with 3 batteries and 315 kWh). The larger battery can be fully charged from 0 to 100% in less than 2 hours. Optionally, an alternating current on-board charger of up to 22 kW can be equipped, designed for customers who are going to operate where direct current chargers are not available or simply want to charge the vehicle in the depot.
Optionally, you can also install a 650 V electric power take-off, that allows powering auxiliary equipment such as an electric refrigeration system for transport applications with regulated temperature or an electro-hydraulic crane. Thanks to this component, it is not necessary to install a separate generator.
Both the DAF XD Electric and the DAF XF Electric will be available as tractor heads and as rigid trucks, and can be ordered now. They will start mass production in 2023, on a new production line at the DAF factory in Eindhoven.
