We are possibly talking about one of the most anticipated BMW projects in recent years. Five decades ago, in 1972, a small group of engineers from the Bayerische Motoren Werke brought the BMW M1 to the world. A mid-engine supercar that even today is considered one of the great automotive jewels of all history. To celebrate that moment, BMW has spent a whole year of tributes, although we were all waiting for this moment. The BMW XM finally becomes official and surely will not leave anyone indifferent, neither by design nor by performance.
Throughout these 50 years of history, the M division has gained more than deserved fame, however, its employees had not had the freedom to create what they wanted since the legendary M1. The XM is the first M developed exclusively by the division’s engineers. They have imagined it, designed it, developed it and finished it off. There will be no decaffeinated versions of an SUV that in a few months will be positioned as the most powerful production car in the company’s history. A luxury that other historical models of the saga such as the M8 or the M5 have not been able to access.
To achieve such an honor, the XM uses a 489-hp 4.4-liter V8 M TwinPower Turbo as its main block, which is combined with a 197-horsepower electric motor. Combined power reaches a zenith of 653 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. In the fall of next year there will be a most extreme unit called Label Red which will add another electric motor to generate a combined output performance of up to 748 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque. Benefits? From 0 to 100 in 4.3 seconds and top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.
As for the electrical part, the bodywork of the BMW XM hides a lithium-ion battery with a net capacity of 25.7 kWh capacity that allows it to achieve an approved autonomy between 82 and 88 kilometers, being able to reach a top speed in electric mode of up to 140 kilometers per hour. For recharging, it uses an alternating current system with a maximum power of 7.4 kW, which will allow the complete battery cycle to be charged in just a few hours.
BMW offers various driving modes, from the conservative efficient modes where the electrical part will be used to the maximum to reduce consumption, to more extreme formats where the engine team is combined to take performance and inertia to the extreme. Of course, It comes standard with an M xDrive all-wheel drive system and an M Sport variable rear differential. that although it does not divert 100% of the system’s force to the rear axle, it does give it a certain priority in 4WD Sport mode. To these trinkets must be added the chassis developed by M, and active stabilizers and a high-performance brake team.
Inside, the BMW XM offers a first-class experience. Being the flagship model of the division and one of the most exclusive models of the brand, first-class materials and equipment are offered from its access level. Technologies that allow occupants to travel comfortably in their 5.11 meters long, 2 meters wide and 1.75 meters high with a wheelbase of 3.1 meters. The whole set announces a minimum scale weight of 2,710 kilograms. The marketing stage starts in the spring of next year with a price that will start at figures close to 150,000 euros. Its manufacture will take place at the American plant in Spartanburg, and its main markets will be the United States, China and the Middle East.
