A new fully electric Alfa Romeo Spider is on the way

Alfa Romeo finds itself once again working on something akin to a renaissance. After years with a range made up of only two models, now it is time to include a third model, the Alfa Romeo Tonale, which will not be the only one to appear as in the coming years the Italians have juicy action plansincluding the Return of the Alfa Romeo Spider in the form of a fully electric car.

In a recent interview between the CEO of Alfa Romeo, Jean-Philippe Imparato, granted to self-express, the manager revealed new clues about the company’s plans for the coming years. Of course, this roadmap sets strict criteria about future releases, since all, to a greater or lesser extent, must be electric or electrified. From the magazine they asked the CEO about the possibilities of seeing an Alfa Romeo Spider again, to which he had no qualms about answering.

Specifically, Iparato replied that It is a model that is in their plans for the coming years, although he must first “rebuild” the company to make such a model entirely profitable and interesting for the brand. The manager stated that before his arrival they will need the launch of five models; on how long they need to develop and launch this convertible, their answer was “five years”.

There are not a few who have dreamed in recent years of the arrival on the market of a new reinterpretation of the legendary Italian convertible, which ceased marketing in 2009, I feel this, in turn, is a reinterpretation of the model sold between the decade of the 60s and 90s. In Alfa Romeo they have plans to launch new models, the first group will be between the years 2023 and 2024, while the second group would come one and two years later, in 2025 and 2026. The only clue that the CEO gives about this is that they will be sustainable and will present a high level of quality, as the Italian firm is used to doing.

We will know in the next few years
We will know in the next few years.

However, the CEO does not specify if the next Alfa Romeo Spider will arrive during or after the estimated launch dates. “I will not say an exact date of arrival”Imparato assured. During said interview, the manager always referred to the model as ‘Duetto’, which represents the arrival of a model based on the original Spider, with rear-wheel drive and high doses of lightness and fun at the wheel, something very similar to the DNA of the Mazda MX -5 that we all know.

What is clear is that the model will be entirely electric and will collect the electrical platform of Stellantis, known as STLA. Imparato assured that in his future plans is the use of said electric platform in its medium and large variants, thus ruling out the use of the smallest, so we could expect that one of these variants will be the foundations of the new electric convertible model. from Alpha. In both cases, the minimum height that it can support will be 4.3 meters in length. This platform may host a battery capacity between 87 and 104 kWh and electric motors between 170 and 240 hp.

In the coming years, Alfa hopes to carry out the landing of new models that will include a large SUV located above the current Stelvio, with its respective 100% electric alternative; a natural substitute for the Alfa Romeo Giulia, as well as an SUV smaller than the Tonale that will belong to the B-SUV segment, and is popularly known as the Alfa Romeo Brennero, this being the brand’s first 100% electric model.
